Kirstin originally comes from the Hamburg area and naturally speaks fluent German. This was her first “Vortrag” at the Bradford Circle so it was a pleasure to listen to her “Hoch Deutsch”. Samhain is not a German word but it seemingly has Gaelic origins. Kirsten explained how it was connected to the Halloween Festival and also All Hallows/All Saints. We learnt many new things about this ancient festival, such as how they had small bonfires and the bones of slaughtered animals had their bones thrown in the fire, hence “bonefire”. Also the colours of orange(vitality) and purple (wisdom) were used, and they still are today, in the form of pumpkins and turnips. To finish the evening we had home made biscuits and cakes !
